An indexable tool post comprises a body portion 10 which is mounted for rotation on a spigot 11 which is attachable to a machine tool by a T-bolt 12, the upper portion of the spigot having a threaded portion 23 to engage, when the body and spigot are assembled, a clamping nut 28 with an actuating handle 31 and which in operation clamps the body to the spigot in one of a plurality of positions, the upper surface of the body 10 being recessed to receive a combined ratchet and cam member 41, 42 which co-operates with a pin 35 slidably located in a bore 34 parallel to the axis of the spigot, the lower end 38 of the pin being shaped to engage V-grooves in the conical base surface 25 of the spigot and the upper end of the pin having a roller 37 which engages a ramp surface 45 on the cam ring 43. A cover ring 39 is positioned over the body recess and when the parts are assembled spring-loaded pawls 54 extending from bores 53 on the underside of the nut 28 engage in the ratchet teeth 41. In operation, anticlockwise rotation of the handle and nut 28 unclamps and indexes the body portion 11 carrying the tools 18. Rotation of the nut effects rotation of the ratchet ring by means of the pawls 54 which effect the disengaging of the pin 35 from the spigot 11 by the action of the spring plunger 48 acting on the cam ring surface 47 which at the same time urges the body portion to rotate in advance of the handle 31. The roller 37 of the pin subsequently partially disengages from the ramp 45 so as to permit the end 38 of the pin 35 to engage the conical surface of the spigot until by movement of the body it engages the next slot. Rotation of the handle and nut clockwise clamps the tool body in the new position.
