Abstract

1,118,398. Safety belt. T. TOREN and P. MEYER. 24 April, 1967 [9 May, 1966], No. 18792/67. Heading A3V. A device for retracting a safety belt 13 when not in use consists of a cylindrical housing 10 which can be pivotally mounted on the vehicle, the housing 10 having a slot 11 through which the belt 13 passes and a spring loaded drum 15 on which the belt 13 is wound. One end of the belt 13 is looped around the drum 15, the loop being formed by stitching 17 and is secured to the drum 15 by rivets 18. A leaf spring 22 folds the loop in the belt 13 when the belt is retracted. The drum 15 is rotatably mounted in plates 14 and is held in position axially by circlips 16. A mandrel 23 is mounted within the drum 15 and a torsion spring 26 is connected at one end 28 to the drum 15 and at the other end to the mandrel 23. The mandrel 23 is prevented from rotating about the axis of the drum by a pin 24 but can slide along the pin 24 and can pivot about the axis of the pin 24. The device may be connected to a vehicle floor by a lug 32 on the housing 10 using a J-bolt. In a modification (Fig. 5) the device is pivotally mounted on a pin 63 in a housing 51 secured beneath the vehicle floor 52. The belt passes through a slot 58 in a plate 57 and is protected by a plastic sleeve 54.
