Abstract

1,117,311. Universal joints. RUBBER & PLASTICS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 23 Sept., 1965 [25 Sept., 1964], No. 39176/64. Heading F2U. A universal joint permitting angular and axial misalignment comprises rods 20 wholly or partly of plastics material disposed in aligned bores 16, 17 of driving and driven coupling parts 10, 11 secured, as by keying, to adjacent shafts, the rods being a close sliding fit in said bores at the rod ends and spaced from said bores adjacent the juxtaposed ends of the latter. The bores lie in planes respectively including the axes of the coupling parts, being radially directed, inclined at an acute angle to the axes, or, as shown, axially directed. The bores are bored in bushings 14, 15 integral with or, by press-fitting, screw-threading, welding or brazing, secured to the coupling parts. The rods are cylindrical with the bores smoothly curved and flared at 18, 19 so that the free length of the rods shortens with increase in torque for stiffness variation. The rods may be arranged in concentric banks for increased torque. The rods may be moulded or extruded and may be of nylon or acetal resin or of thermosetting resin reinforced with wire or glass fibre.
