An internal-combustion engine comprises an opening 31 through a cylindrical wall of the cylinder adjacent the cylinder head 27, a compression relief valve 36 to close the opening and a seat 32 for the valve outwardly of the opening, the valve having a protrusion 38 to completely fill the opening when the valve is closed and to clean out the opening when the valve closes. As shown a passage 42 leads from the valve to the exhaust port 24.
