Abstract
1,113,465. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 3 Feb., 1967 [11 Feb., 1966], No. 6259/66. Heading G6C. A fuel element in which a cluster of parallel fuel rods is supported and which is intended to be positioned in a fuel element channel in endto-end association with one or more similar fuel elements to form a unitary assembly which is manipulatable into and out of the channel, is characterized by deformable latch means for engagement with non-deformable latch means of an endwise adjacent fuel element, and by releasable locking means for holding the latch means in the engaged position. In the embodiment. shown in Fig. 3, a guide tube 1 (1<SP>1</SP>) extends axially along each fuel element through intermediate fuel rod locating grids (not shown) and a top support grid 6. At its lower end, the guide tube 1 (1<SP>1</SP>) is disposed within a sleeve 2 welded to radial supports 3 which form part of a fuel rod support grid 4. The guide tube 1(1<SP>1</SP>) is disposed within a sleeve 7 welded to the support grid 6. Members 91 formed at the upper, end portion of sleeve 7 have part-annular projections 10<SP>1</SP> with inclined surfaces 12<SP>1</SP>, 20. An inwardly extending annular projection 13<SP>1</SP> formed at the lower end of sleeve 2 has inclined surfaces 15<SP>1</SP>, 21. Relative axial movement of the adjacent fuel elements towards one another causes the members 9<SP>1</SP> to be moved inwardly until the projections 101 have passed the projection 131. A lifting member 18<SP>1</SP>, or its enlarged portion 191 as shown, as the case may be, serves to prevent unwanted unlatching. After removal of the lifting member 18<SP>1</SP>, the fuel elements may be separated by relative axial withdrawal only, the inclined surface 21 engaging the inclined surfaces 20 and serving to move the members 91 inwardly until the projections 10<SP>1</SP> can pass the projection 13<SP>1</SP> and pass out of the sleeve 2. In two alternative embodiments, a latch release member associated with the latch means but movable relative thereto serves to effect positive release of the latch means following release of the looking means, and the locking means comprises a member associated with the latch means and movable relative thereto, respectively.
