Abstract

1,112,989. Disc brakes. KELSEY-HAYES CO. 8 Nov., 1966 [22 Nov., 1965], No. 49943/66. Heading F2E. In a disc brake of the floating caliper type comprising a caliper 25 which supports a pair of pads (30, 34, Fig. 2, not shown) and is mounted in a recess 21 between a pair of spaced arms 19 of a torque plate 17 carried by a stationary axle part 16, the means for mounting the caliper between the arms 19 consists of two bolts 26 which are screwed into the caliper and have unthreaded portions (27, Fig. 3, not shown) adapted to be received in slots 24, Fig. 4, provided in axially extending flange portions forming parts of an axially directed flange extending around the periphery of the torque plate, such that substantially universal movement of the caliper is permitted which enables the faces of the pads to align themselves with the respective disc faces. The caliper is bored to provide a cylinder containing a piston for applying one pad directly, the other pad being secured to the caliper on the opposite side of the disc. The backing plate of the directly applied pad has a flange 31 at each end which engages a pressedout lug 33 on each arm 19 of the torque plate to guide the pad for axial movement and at the same time locate it in the radial direction. Each of the bolts 26 carries a plate which covers the respective slot to prevent ingress of dirt. The disc (15, Fig. 2) is of the ventilated type having spaced walls (15a, 15b).
