Abstract

1,112,698. Copolymers of ethylene and butadiene. MONTECATINI EDISON S.p.A. 15 March, 1967 [18 March, 1966], No. 12053/67. Heading C3P. An unsaturated crystalline copolymer of units of ethylene and butadiene in which the diene units have an essentially 1,4-trans structure and contain from 0À1 to 60 mol per cent butadiene, and which do not exhibit crystallinity typical of butadiene units of the trans-1,4 type are made by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of a catalyst consisting of the reaction product of a complex of the formula TiCl 4 .2PR 3 where R is aryl, with an aluminium dialkyl monochloride. The catalyst is preferably formed in situ, and the copolymerization carried out in a hydrocarbon solvent. The product may be fractionated by solvent extraction. The copolymers may be sulphur vulcanized using conventional mixes. The exemplified complex is TiCl 4 .2P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 .
