Abstract
1,112,384. Fuelling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 4 Feb., 1966 [12 Feb., 1965; 1 Oct., 1965], Nos. 6264/65 and 41856/65. Heading G6C. [Also in Division B8] A reactor refuelling machine has gripping jaws 11 pivoted at 22 which are held in engagement with a fuel element 13 by a guide tube 12 until the element is completely withdrawn within the tube. The jaws are moved to a disengaged position at the lower end of the tube 12 by slots 28 and cam surfaces 31 which cooperate with rollers 26, 30 pivoted on the jaws. The jaws are moved up and down the tube by a screw-and-nut 14, 16 connected by a latch 17, 17a. Alternatively, Fig. 1a (not shown), the jaws may be connected to the nut by a sliding latch (101) moved into engagement with grooves (105) in the nut by a scroll cam (104) and a pin (103). This connection permits pivotal movement between the nut and the latch about a horizontal axis, thus minimizing the danger of jamming. The screw is driven through a pivoted universal joint provided with meshing pegs (134). When the fuel element is completely within the tube 12 a safety catch (38), Fig. 3b (not shown), is moved below the element by a rod (35) which is raised by the nut. The tube 12 is positioned over the fuel elements by parallel links (67), Figs. 3a, 3b (not shown), mounted on a rotatable pillar (70). The refuelling machine may be used with the magazine for fuel assemblies which forms the subjectmatter of Specification 1,112,383.
