Abstract
1,111,110. Making helically wound tubes; welding by pressure. FAY PIPE & PILE Inc. 23 March, 1966 [22 March, 1965], No. 12796/66. Headings B3A, B3E and B3R. In a method of making helically wound tubes, sheet material is fed into a unit 2 wherein the material is formed into a deformed helical loop, the advanced edges of the deformed loop are heated, the deformation is removed, the advanced edges of the loop are welded and the circumference of the loop during the latter two stages is controlled. The deformation may take the form of a taper or the sheet edges may be flanged by rollers (65), Fig. 9 (not shown). The edges to be joined are heated in a highfrequency electrical unit having contact shoes 33, 35 and butt welded together between rollers 37, 39. The taper may be applied either by off-setting a roller 17 or by adjustment of a shoe 18 on a stanchion 13, the taper finishing in the radial plane of the weld. A circumference control device 41 lies in the plane of the weld and is axially adjustable on horizontal supports 51. The device 41 comprises a ring 47 on which are fitted four rollers (79), Fig. 8 (not shown) radially adjustable to the size of the finished tube. A holding ring 43 is required when loop deformation other than edge flanging is used.
