Abstract

1,034,421. Coiling helically jointed tubes; seaming. E. JENSEN. Jan. 18, 1963 [Jan. 26, 1962], No. 3130/62. Headings B3E and B3J. Apparatus for making helical lock seam tubing from metal strip includes a head having an internal surface defining the helical pitch of the path of travel of the strip, a pair of pinching rollers between which preformed edges of the strip are pinched into a helical lock seam when the strip has negotiated a single turn of the helix, a pair of push feed rollers to feed the strip to the head, a set of rollers between which the strip is drawn by the feed rollers to deform the edges of the strip, and a carriage or support for the feed and forming rollers adjustable about an axis intersecting the axes of the pinching rollers. Metal strip is pulled by a pair of driven feed rolls 4, 5 through rollers 8 which form a flange on one edge of the strip and a channel on the other edge. The strip is pushed by the rollers 4, 5, between upper and lower guide plates 21, 22 and between an edge guide bar, adjustable by a screw, and an edge roller, to a forming head 3 which coils the strip into helical form. The mating edge flange and channel are pinched together to form a lock seam by inner and outer rollers 7, 6. The inner roller 7 is carried by a bracket 20 backed by a clamping jaw. The outer roller 6 is carried by a fork 13 on a piston-rod 12 urged upwardly by pressure in a cylinder 11. The feed and forming rollers and the guide means are supported on a carriage 9 adjustable about the axis of the cylinder 11 and locked in its selected angular position by a clamping bolt 18. The head 3 may comprise a flexible steel band 23, Fig. 4 (not shown), bowed into a helix and fixed at the ends.
