In a method of assembling a wrapped filter tip in end-to-end relationship with a tobacco rod, or one or more wrapped filter elements in end-to-end relationship with another or other filter elements to form a multiple filter tip, to prevent the formation of air passages between the primary and secondary wrappers of the filter tip when the tip is either under or over size, the members to be assembled are brought into contact and alignment with one another, a paper or like wrapper is folded progressively about the assembly and the primary wrapper of the filter tip or of the said one or more filter elements is slit longitudinally. A succession of enwrapped plug elements 11 is fed to, and brought into endwise abutment by, a helically ridged drum 14, which delivers the elements 11 on to a continuous paper strip supported by a moving garniture tape 18. An endless belt 20, travelling at the same speed as the tape 18, in conjunction with a pressure foot 25, holds the elements 11 in place on the paper 17 while this paper is partially wrapped around them. The primary wrapper is then slit by a knife 26 rotating at the same circumferential speed at the linear speed of the advancing elements 11 when the paper 17 has taken the form shown in Fig. 8. Subsequent closure and sealing of the wrapper paper 17 is effected in known manner. In the manufacture of filter cigarettes, a circular knife is mounted to slit the wrapper of the filters to be attached to cigarettes at the point at which they pass axially from the feed hopper to the point at which they are attached to the tobacco rods.
