Abstract

In Example 1, 3,5-di-tert-butyltoluene is prepared by the AlCl3-catalysed reaction of toluene with tert-butyl chloride or with isobutene.ALSO:Compounds of formula <FORM:1110030/C2/1> wherein R1 is C1- 3 alkyl and R2, R3 are each C4- 6 tert-alkyl, are prepared by reacting the corresponding unchlorinated or monochlorinated precursor with Cl2 in a polar medium in presence of a Lewis acid. The product may be dealkylated to give 2,6-Cl2C6H3-R1.
