Abstract

The invention comprises organotin derivatives of natural and synthetic polymers and derivatives of such polymers, said polymers and their derivatives having hydroxyl, carboxyl, acid anhydride, or sulphonic acid groups, wherein the organotin is attached to the polymer through these groups by an ester or ether linkage and wherein the attached organotin group has the general formula R1R2R3Sn-, where R1, R2 and R3 are substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and may be the same or different, but excluding organotin esters of soluble polymethacrylic acid and liquid organotin derivatives of synthetic copolymers having carboxyl groups. Organotin ether derivatives of a polyhydroxy polymer may be prepared by converting the hydroxy groups to O-M+ groups, where M is an alkali metal, and reacting this with an organic tin compound of formula R1R2R3SnX, where X is an inorganic ion or an organic ion derived from an acid having a pKa not higher than 4.8. Organotin carboxy ester derivatives of a polymer containing carboxyl groups or anhydride groups may be prepared by reacting the polymer with the corresponding organotin hydroxide or oxide or by reacting a metal salt of the polymer with an organotin inorganic salt. Derivatives of a polymer containing sulphonic groups may be prepared by reacting the polymer with an organotin hydroxide or oxide, or by reacting a metal salt of the polymer with an organotin inorganic salt. Specified polymers are starch and starch derivatives, polyvinyl alcohol and derivatives, polyglycol ethers having hydroxyl groups, cellulose ethers, methyl cellulose, hydroxy-alkyl derivatives of starch and cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, polyacrylic acid, cross-linked polymethacrylic acid, partially hydrolysed ester derivatives of polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acid, carboxymethyl cellulose, cellulose esters with mono- and dicarboxylic acids or with dicarboxylic acids, cellulose acetate, phthalate, cellulose acetate succinate or cellulose succinate, polystyrene sulphonic acid, polyvinyl sulphonic acid and styrene-maleic acid or anhydride copolymers. In examples the tri-n-butyl and tri-phenyl tin derivatives of many of the above are prepared. Solutions of some derivatives in dimethyl sulphoxide, optionally containing K.Cl, are prepared.ALSO:Biocide, (bacteriocide and fungicide and fungistatic) compositions containing organotin derivatives of natural and synthetic polymers and derivatives of such polymers, said polymers and their derivatives having hydroxyl, carboxyl, acid anhydride, or sulphonic acid groups, wherein the organotin is attached to the polymer through these groups by an ether or ester linkage and wherein the attached organotin group has the general formula R1, R2, R3 Sn-, where R1, R2 and R3 are substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and may be the same or different, but excluding organotin esters of soluble polymethacrylic acid and liquid organotin derivatives of synthetic copolymers having carboxyl groups. In Examples 18-21 the derivatives are dissolved in dimethylsulphoxide.
