Abstract

Epsilon-caprolactone is prepared by heating esters or self-polyesters of epsilon-hydroxycaproic acid between approximately 150 and 350 C. in the presence of a basic compound as catalyst. Reduced pressure is preferred and the reaction products may be distilled as they are formed, or the alkanol first in the case of an alkyl ester. The basic compound may be a hydroxide, oxide, carbonate, cyanide, alcoholate, acetate or propionate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, Mg, Zn, Cd, Al, Ti, Pb, Sn, or Sb, or a basic salt such as a Cu or Ag basic carbonate or acetate.
