Abstract
1,107,843. Pipe joints. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 6 May, 1965, No. 19140/65. Heading F2G. [Also in Division F4] Heat exchanger tubes 14 comprise hollow filaments of a polyfluorinated polymer having an external diameter of up to 500 mils (0À5 inch) and a wall thickness of 0À5 to 30 mils (0À0005 to 0À03 inch). The length of the tubes may be anything from 0À5 to 20 feet. Preferred polymers are polytetrafluorethylene or a copolymer of tefrafluorethylene or hexafluoropropylene. Other examples mentioned are polytrifluorochloroethylene and polyvinyl fluoride. The tube ends are secured in tube plates 15 and in one example the tubes are cemented with a high melting tetrafluorethylene wax into suitable apertures in a tube plate made of titanium. In another example the tube ends extend individually or in bundles through and beyond apertures in the tube plates 15. This is to ensure the correct spacing of the tubes. An epoxy or other suitable resin is then used to seal the tubes to the tube plates 15. Finally the tube ends are out off flush with the plates. The heat exchanger shell 11 may be made from metal or from a plastics material.
