Abstract
1,106,960. Fluid-pressure servomotor systems. J.M. MITCHELL. April 7, 1965 [April 16, 1964], No.14847/65. Heading G3P. An apparatus for performing a work function in accordance with a pre-recorded input comprises a record 74 mounted for rotation on a platform 32 which is movable in two directions at right angles to each other relative to a fixed base 28. The platform is fixed to two cylinders at right angles to each other which contains pistons fixed to guide rods such as 48 carried by blocks 50 slidable on rods 38 fixed to the base 28. Fluidpressure supplied to one or other ends of the cylinders thus causes movement of the cylinder and platform relative to the guide rods 48. The record 74 has three grooves two of which cooperate with separate feelers 80 to actuate valves which control the two cylinders carried by the platform 32 and a third which co-operates with a feeler 152 to actuate a valve 150 controlling the supply of fluid to opposite ends of a piston-cylinder device 117 whose cylinder is fixed to and extends through the platform 32. In operation, rotation of the record by an electric motor acts through the feelers 80 to move the platform 32 until the valves actuated by the feelers are recentred and actuates the piston of device 117 whose piston rod acts through a rack 124, sprockets and chains 132, 140 and rack 148 to move the seat of the valve 150 until the valve is recentred. The combined movement of the platform 28 and piston rod of device 117 operates a linkage 106, 108, 110, and 104 carrying the tool 270, the linkage 108, 110 being pivoted to and passing through a slot in a member 114 pivoted to the fixed base 28. In a modification, the base 28 is movable in two directions parallel to the directions of movement of the platform, the base being operated in a similar manner to the platform by valves actuated by a feeler which contacts the workpiece. Such an arrangement is used where the tool acts on a moving workpiece e. g. a workpiece on a conveyer belt whereby the base 28 is maintained fixed relative to the workpiece.
