1,104,372. Shock-absorbing devices; springs. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 2 Nov., 1962 [2 Nov., 1961], No. 45695/62. Divided out of 1,104,371. Headings F2E and F2S. A shock-absorbing device for mounting one member on another comprises an auxiliary member clamped through deformable means to the first member and also clamped through other deformable means to the second member so that shock in either of two opposed directions is limited by deformation of one of said deformable members. The embodiment described relates to the three-point mounting of a gearbox, on the wall of an armoured vehicle and protects the gear-box from shocks resulting from the impact of shells. The auxiliary member 5 is fixed to the vehicle wall 6 by a bolt 9 through a deformable member 3 and a stack of cupped spring washers 1. The gear-box flange 8 is clamped to the auxiliary member 5 by a pair of threaded sleeves 7, 15, acting through a second deformable member 4 and a second stack of cupped spring washers 2. The two stacks of washers 1, 2 are each arranged in two sections of differing stiffness; i.e. first sections 17, 19 of a high stiffness in which successive washers are placed with their concave surfaces all facing the same way, and second sections 16, 18 of low stiffness in which successive washers are positioned with their concave faces in opposite directions. An impact of sufficient force in either axial direction crushes the deformable member, thus absorbing most of the impact energy. After such deformation, rigidity of attachment is maintained by expansion of the spring washers to make up for the loss of thickness resulting from the crushing of the deformable members.
