[Also in Divisions B3 and H1] A device for giving a cylindrical mount 7 for a sample 1 to be spark-eroded for mass spectrographic analysis a combined rotational and translational movement comprises a ball 10, held in a fixed support 11, which is rotated at constant speed by a disc 20 and gear drive 13 and which engages the lower surface of the flange 9 of the mount 7. Translational movement is communicated to the mount carriage 18 by worm wheel 16 and lead screw 17, the worm wheel 16 being driven by a worm (not shown) from the flange 9 which is provided with gear teeth. The gearing is such that the speed of the carriage 18 along the lead screw is proportional to the speed of rotation of the mount and ensures that the spark-erosion point follows a spiral path over the surface of the sample with each loop slightly overlapping an earlier one so that the entire surface is covered.
