Abstract

1,101,870. Stopping leaks. G. WÍRLE. 9 Sept., 1966, No. 40288/66. Heading F2P. A hollow body of spherical or conical form for sealing leaks in pipes has a wall constituted by a resilient inner layer and a plastics outer layer; alternatively, the body has a solid core of resilient material or is of a soft resilient material penetrated by one or more bunches of fibres 2, Fig. 3, terminating in tails 3. The bodies, which have a specific gravity substantially equal to that of the fluid flowing in a leaking pipe, are forced by a pump along the pipe and in a direction opposite to the normal liquid flow direction, whereby the bodies are conveyed to the site of a leak which is then sealed by one or more of the bodies. Any bodies which take no part in the sealing operation are returned to the input position thereof when subsequent flow of fluid takes place and are retained by a filter. Bodies of progressively increasing size may be introduced successively into the pipe or bodies of different sizes are introduced simultaneously into the pipe.
