Abstract

1,101,706. Grinding. ETABLISSEMENTS BIEBUYCK. 15 Aug., 1966 [4 Oct., 1965], No. 36392/66. Heading B3D. A machine for smoothing or dressing the top rim of tumblers comprises a head 9 arranged to grip the tumbler by its base, a device to rotate the head about the axis of the tumbler, a grinding or polishing tool 12, 13 supported for movement towards and away from the gripping head and formed by two flexible grinding or polishing elements which are positioned symmetrically one on each side of the direction of application of a tumbler against them and which, when not engaged by a tumbler, are situated in a common plane at right angles to the direction and, during a rim smoothing action, bend or flex slightly when the rim is engaged therewith, end means for moving the head and a tumbler gripped thereby towards and away from the grinding tool. As described, the machine consists of a pair of uprights 5, 6 having a fixed upper member, which carries a plurality of heads 9 for gripping the feed 3 of tumblers 1, and a vertically displaceable bottom member 8 which carries a plurality of grinding tools 12, 13. The heads 9 are vertically displaceable by means of pneumatic piston and cylinder devices under the control of electromagnetic valves. Each head has a bearing face having a number of claws 11 which are movable by rack-and-pinion mechanisms controlled by a cam, the cams being mounted on a common shaft and arranged upon rotation of the shaft to operate successively. The heads are rotated by conventional means and are then moved to present the rims of the tumblers to the grinding tools. Each tool consists of a pair of conical discs 14, 15 secured to rotatable spindles 16, 17, each disc supporting a flexible metal sheet 12, 13 having a diamond covering or facing on its marginal upper face. Liquid, such as water, is supplied by. jets 18 . . . 21 to the inner and outer surface of the rims. The discs 12, 13 are rotated in the same direction and opposite to that of the tumbler and during grinding or polishing flex slightly. The height of the lower member 8 carrying the grinding tools is automatically adjustable to the height of a tumbler 1 by the use of a specimen tumbler 22 which is placed upon a support 23 and, when the member 8 is raised to the correct height, engages a sleeve of adjustable length to operate a switch. In an alternative embodiment, the grinding or polishing discs are replaced by endless abrasion belts, the belts of each pair moving in opposite directions and are disposed with their active portions above sloping planes, whereby they can flex when engaged by the rim of the tumbler.
