Abstract

110,167. Asbury, D. F. Feb. 3, 1916, [Convention date]. Ordnance breech mechanism. - Relates to primer-lock tiring-mechanism, particularly that described in Specification 1923/13, and consists of improvements in (1) the primer magazine, (2) the guide for the primers between the magazine and the axial vent, and (3) the stop on the pivoted hammer which engages the box slide to prevent the lock moving whilst a primer is being inserted by the hammer extension. The invention is shown applied to the firing-mechanism described in the above-mentioned Specification, in which the lockframe or " wedge " 21, Fig. 1, carries the primer magazine 22 and a pivoted hammer B fitted with an extension 36 for pushing a primer from the magazine through a primer guide and into the vent when the lock occupies the position shown. According to the present invention, the primer magazine 22, Figs. 3 and 4, has a side cut-away portion 30 to facilitate insertion of the primers and a shoulder 31 for retaining the uppermost primer. An inclined finger 33 at the base of the magazine causes the lowermost primer to move forward into the primer guide 24, Fig. 3, which is tubular and fitted with steel wires 28 which support the primer on its way to the vent chamber. The box slide 14 is extended at 20, Fig. 1, between the fingers 19 of the primer extractor to form an entering guide for the primers. At the beginning of the closing movement of the lock frame, the hammer extension 36 is prevented from inserting a primer by a spring-controlled lever 38 which is tripped by an arm 39 when the lock frame reaches the primer-inserting position shown in Fig. 1. The lock frame is held in this position, whilst a primer is being inserted, by a stop 42 which is fixed in a recess 42<1> in the hammer by a pin and which engages abutments 43 on the box slide 14.
