Abstract

Adhesive compositions comprise a linear, organic solvent soluble polyesterurethane rubbery material, butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer rubbery material and a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer resinous material, dissolved in an organic solvent. The polyesterurethane may be derived from a polyester of C4- 10 alkanedioic acid and a C4- 10 glycol, and a diisocyanate in the presence of a C4- 10 glycol, preferably poly-(tetramethylene adipate) and diphenyl methane p,p1-diisocyanate in the presence of 1,4-butanediol. The solvent may be a methyl ethyl ketone/tetrahydrofuran mixture. The adhesives may be used for sticking sole and heel units to shoe bottoms.ALSO:In a method of shoemaking a shoe bottom is located against a mould cavity and polyvinyl chloride is injected into the mould cavity to provide a sole and heel unit adherent to the shoe bottom, said shoe bottom having been coated with an adhesive composition comprising a linear, organic solvent soluble polyesterurethane rubbery material, a butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer rubbery material and a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate resinous material dissolved in an organic solvent, and the solvent evaporated. In the manufacture of shoes with leather uppers the adhesive is preferably applied to an inturned lasting margin of the leather upper extending round the shoe bottom, the solvent is allowed to evaporate and the shoe bottom heated to reactivate the adhesive and positioned against the mould cavity. In examples the polyesterurethane is derived from poly (tetramethylene adipate) and diphenyl methane-p, p1-di-iso cyanate and the solvent is a methyl ethyl ketone/tetrahydrofuran mixture.
