[Also in Division F1] A by-pass gas turbine engine in a VTOL aircraft has a chamber 8 on each side into which by-pass air and turbine exhaust gases flow, propulsion nozzles being formed by a row of transverse slots in the base of each chamber, the propulsion jets being deflected by visors 13 pivotable about horizontal axes to provide forward thrust, direct lift or braking thrust. The engine is preferably arranged so that the thrust vector, when direct lift is selected, passes through the aircraft centre of gravity.
