Abstract

The stability of vinylidene chloride is improved by contacting it with an aqueous solution containing ions of silver, mercury and/or copper. The aqueous solution may contain a co-ordinating ligand to complex the metal ions and solubilize the metal salt. The treated compound may be purified by filtration, phase separation, scrubbing with water, drying and distillation and it may be stored in the presence of p-methoxyphenol. The aqueous solution containing the metal ions obtained at the phase-separation stage may be recycled and, when ammoniacal cuprous sulphate is used as stabilizer, this aqueous solution may be oxidized with air to give a solution containing cupric ions which is passed to a chamber containing copper for reduction of the cupric ions to cuprous ions. The vinylidene chloride used may be obtained by dehydrochlorinating 1,1,2-trichloroethane which may be obtained by reacting chlorine with ethylene.
