Abstract
A spinning solution comprises a polymer of acrylonitrile containing at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile dissolved in a solvent mixture of (1) N,N-dimethylacetamide and (2) from 2 to 30% by weight of the polymer, of a second solvent selected from N,N-dimethylformamide, dimethylsulphoxide and ethylene carbonate, said polymer being present in amount at least 10% by weight of the solvent mixture. Polymers specified are polyacrylonitrile and copolymers of acrylonitrile with acrylamide, methyl (meth)acrylate, dimethyl fumarate, vinyl acetate, vinyl-1-imidazole, N-vinyl carbazole, vinyl pyridine or methyl vinyl ketone. Examples are given of spinning fibres from solutions of a 93% acrylonitrile/7% vinyl acetate copolymer in each of the 3 possible solvent mixtures.
