Abstract

Acrylonitrile polymers or copolymers or polymer blends thereof have incorporated therein, before spinning into fibres, an oxacyanine brightener of the formula <FORM:1055671/C3/1> wherein R1 and R11 each represent an alkyl group having up to 5 carbon atoms, R1 and R2 each represent an unsubstituted or nonionogenically substituted (i.e. free of acid or basic groups) straight chain alkyl group having up to 5 carbon atoms and X-represents an anion which does not affect the optical properties of the oxacyanine cation. Nonionogenic substituents in the groups R1 and R2 include cyano and halo substituents. Xmay be, for example, an anion derived from hydrochloric, hydrobomic, sulphuric, p-toluene - sulphonic, p - chlorobenzene - sulphonic or benzene-sulphonic acid. The brightener is advantageously dissolved in the monomer(s) before polymerization but may also be dissolved together with the polymer in a solvent in the preparation of spinning solutions (dry or wet process). The acrylonitrile may be copolymerized with, for example, vinyl pyridine, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, N-vinyl carbazole, vinylidene chloride, acrylic acid esters or styrene. In Examples 1-11 the brightener and polymer are dissolved in dimethyl-formamide, dimethyl acetamide, ethylene carbonate or tetrahydrofuran, and in Example 12, the brightener is dissolved in acrylonitrile which is then polymerized in the presence of polyethyl methacrylate in an aqueous sodium thiocyanate solution using azobis-isobutyronitrile as initiator.
