In a sealing means for a rotary shaft 12 comprising a metallic bellows 22 which at one end is attached to a ring 20 connected to an annular housing 14 pressed into a cavity 15 in a pump casing 16 and is connected at the other end to an annular retainer 24 which carries a sealing ring 28 which bears against a sealing face 25 on a hub member 26 fixed to the shaft 12 vibration damping means, which prevents ganging up at one end or the other of the bellows, comprises a circular band 30 which bears lightly upon the outer edges of the bellows 22 and which has pressed out cleats 32 which project radially outwardly and engage in a circumferential groove 31 in the housing 14. The bellows 22 is formed of a number of metallic annular members having their adjacent inner and outer margins welded together. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the cleats of the band extend radially inwardly to press lightly upon the annular retainer (24) the band being housed in a circumferential groove (41) in the housing (14). If the band is constructed of non-resilient materials it can be secured e.g. by welding or cementing, to the housing 14. In a further modification the band 30 is replaced by three separate cleats (32B), Fig. 9, not shown, the bases of the cleats being accommodated in three equi-circumferentially-spaced recesses in the housing (14). An alternative arrangement, Fig. 10 (not shown), employs a coil spring (67) instead of a bellows the spring (67) being constrained between a flange (64) on the retainer (24A) and a flange (18A) on the housing (14A), the retainer (24A) being prevented from rotating by a tongue (61) which engages in an aperture in the flange (64), and a fluid packing (66) being located in a circular recess (60) in the flange (18A) of the housing (14A). The spring (67) is damped by a circular band (30).
