Abstract

A syringe for the injection or withdrawal of fluids comprises a flexible bag for the fluids, the bag being subjected to an excess gaseous pressure or reduced gaseous pressure depending on whether fluid is to be ejected from or sucked into the bag. In one embodiment (Fig. 2) the syringe comprises a flexible bag 4 surrounded by rigid member 1 to which is connected a hand compressible member 5. The member 1 has an aperture 6 which may be closed by the hand or a manually operated valve 7 may be provided to close or open the aperture 6. The cannula 3 may always be in communication with the bag 4 or brought into communication with the bag 4 prior to use, by piercing diaphragm 9. The pressure on bag 4 may be increased to eject fluid by closing aperture 6 and compressing member 5, or decreased to withdraw fluid by closing aperture 6 and allowing the compressed member 5 to expand due to its own elasticity. In another embodiment (Fig. 5) the bag 4a in a filled condition, is in a sealed chamber 11 of container 1, the chamber 1<SP>1</SP> being under excess pressure (or vacuum if the syringe is to be used for withdrawing fluids). The container 1 has an antechamber 30 under vacuum. The container is telescopically mounted in sleeve 21. In use the cannula 3 is inserted into the body and the container 1 is inserted into sleeve 21 till the cannula 3 punctures sealing washer 17 and enters chamber 30. Due to the vacuum in chamber 30 fluid is withdrawn into the chamber 30 and if this fluid shows that the cannula 3 has-been correctly inserted in the body, the container 1 is further inserted into the sleeve 21 till the cannula 3 punctures diaphragm 16 and communicates with the bag 4a. Due to the chamber 1<SP>1</SP> being at excess pressure fluid in the bag is injected into the body. The sleeve 21, container 1 and bag 4a are made at least partially of a transparent material.
