Abstract

1,096,291. Elevated railway locomotives; two rail locomotives. QUALTER, HALL & CO. (SALES), Ltd. April 7, 1965 [March 18, 1964; Aug. 24, 1964; Nov. 18, 1964], Nos. 11548/64, 34597/64 and 47003/64. Heading B7L. [Also in Division F2] A locomotive is suspended from a rail 10 (Fig. 1, Provisional Specification 11548/64) by wheels 8 swivellable in trunnions 9 and driving wheel 5, driven by shaft 4 from a motor 2, is displaceably mounted relative to the locomotive body 1 on side plates 11 the ends of which are pivotally mounted to the body 1 at 13 and to variable length links at 15 which comprise a piston 14 movable in a cylinder 6, tractive effort sensing means at each end of the locomotive are attached to draw bars 23 and regulate the pressure exerted on the piston 14 thereby varying the pressure exerted on the underside of the track by the driving wheel 5. The sensing means, Fig. 2 (Provisional Specification 11548/64, not shown) comprises a piston 21 fast with a drawbar 23 mounted in a double-ended master cylinder 7 and compression or extension of the drawbar by an attached wagon is communicated through hydraulic liquid via lines 20a, shuttle valve 20b and line 20 to the underside of piston 14 thereby forcing the driving wheel 5 into engagement with the rail. In normal driving conditions a spring situated beneath the piston 14 retains the driving wheel in contact with the rail. In a modification, Fig. 3 (Provisional Specification 11548/64, not shown) the side plates 11 are pivoted within body members attached to the locomotive body. In another embodiment, the Figure of Provisional Specification 47205/64 (not shown), the driving wheel 5 rotates on an axle the ends of which are journalled at 32 in a pair of yokes 31. The yokes are supported by a pair of variable-length links formed by pistons 30 located in cylinders 6 fast with the locomotive body 1, each cylinder being in contact with the tractive effort sensing means. In a further embodiment, Fig. 1 (Provisional Specification 34597/64, not shown) the driving wheel 6 contacts one side of the vertical web of an I-shaped single running rail 2, a counter roller 14 taking up the pressure exerted by this wheel bearing against the opposite side of the web and being rotatably mounted between parallel flanges 13 supported by the locomotive body. The locomotive is supported on wheels 15 which run on the horizontal flanges of the rail 2. In yet another embodiment, Fig. 3 (Provisional Specification 47003/64) the locomotive runs on a two-rail horizontally disposed track on wheels 3 and the body supports two driving wheels 12 and 13 which are mounted at opposite ends of the locomotive and at opposite sides of the longitudinal centre line of the locomotive body and contact the inner sides of the vertical webs of the I-shaped rails 1. Counter rollers 14 and 15, mounted on the body 2, are associated with each of the driving wheels 5 and 6 respectively and contact the rail opposite to these wheels taking up the pressure exerted by them. In Fig. 1 (Provisional Specification 47003/64, not shown) the driving wheels 5 and 6 are mounted adjacent one another on opposite sides of the longitudinal centre line of the locomotive body.
