Abstract

Low tenacity, e.g. diacetate or triacetate, yarn is highly twist-crimped by passing the yarn over or through a heating or setting zone whilst under a low tension, i.e. not more than 0.09 gms./denier, so as to allow the yarn to shrink to the extent determined by the temperature of the yarn within the zone, thence through a twisting apparatus which the yarn enters at the same low tension. The yarn is twisted by frictional engagement with two or more endless tracks which, with acceptable slip, rotate the yarn without pretension being applied thereto. The tracks are formed by the inner surfaces of annular members which are supported and driven by endless belt and pulley mechanism and are so disposed in spaced planes in the general direction of yarn travel that, in use, the yarn is diverted by the engaging surfaces of successive tracks alternately in opposite directions so as to follow a zig-zag path therethrough.
