Abstract

A work-supporting wheel assembly comprises a pair of wheels carried in frames which are pivotally supported to allow for adjustment of the spacing wheels and driven by a common drive member mounted on an axis between and parallel to the pivotal axes of the frames which meshes with drive members which are mounted at the pivotal axes of the frames and which are drivingly connected to the wheels. A pair of wheel assemblies (Fig. 1, not shown) one having power driven wheels and the other idler wheels may be used to support a cylindrical tank during the welding of circumferential seams thereof. In the driven unit, a common input drive gear 50 meshes with idler gears 64 which are mounted on the pivotal axes 55 of the roll frames and which therefore at all pivotal locations of the roll frames transmit drive to output gears 62 fixed to the wheels 56. A locking pin 71 inserted through aligned holes in the roll frames and the base frame supports the roll frames fixedly in a selected pivotal position. In a modification (Figs. 7-9, not shown) two idler gears are interposed between the input gear and the wheels in order to allow greater spacing of the work supporting wheels.
