Abstract
1,094,604. Road rollers. RHEINSTAHL HENSCHEL A.G. March 25, 1965 [Sept. 22, 1964], No. 12700/65. Heading B7H. A road roller includes at least one roller consisting of two frusto-conical elements rotatably mounted on inclined axes so that the adjacent bases of the elements define an upwardly-open wedge-shaped opening through which extends support means, steering means and/or drive means for the roller. Each frusto-conical element may be divided into two, three or more relatively rotatable sections, one or more of which are driven. In Fig. 7, each element consists of two sections rotatably mounted on an inclined shaft 29 and driven from differential gearing 10 through planetary gearing 26, 27, 28 permitting relative rotation between the sections. Brakes or differential locks may be provided to ensure that the sections rotate in unison when required, and the axes of the shafts may also be inclined in projection on the horizontal plane to form an obtuse angle facing in the direction of travel, hydraulic means being provided to vary the position of the shafts 29 when reversing. Fig. 1 shows a tandem roller having two such rollers 4a, 4b driven from an engine 16 through a gear-box and universally jointed shafts 14. The roller 4a, 4b may alternatively be driven from the engine 16 through step-up gearing and an hydrostatic pump supplying motors of which only one may be used when required to provide a travelling speed higher than the normal working speed. Both rollers 4a, 4b are pivotable about a longitudinal axis relative to the roller frame 4, and the rollers are independently steerable so that a strip wider than the rollers may be rolled by crab-steering. A ploughshare (Fig. 5, not shown) may project forwardly from between the frusto-conical elements of a roller. Rollers consisting of two frusto-conical elements may be employed in towed single-axle rollers, sheep's foot rollers and vibrating rollers. A tricycle roller may have a front roller consisting of two frusto-conical elements and rear rollers each formed by a single frusto-conical element.
