Screwing; taps.-Taps, screwing-plates, &c. have alternate teeth in each land missing and the teeth backed off both as regards thickness and height. In making a tap to cut a right-hand thread of the pitch p and having N lands, a thread is first cut by a right-hand chaser such as shown in Figs. 2 or 3 having the pitch P = p (N + 1) and then a left-hand thread is cut having the pitch P<1> = p (N - 1). The cutting edges are formed by milling away the parts shown batched in the development shown in Fig. 4. The teeth may be of the forms shown in Figs. 5 and 6. A guide-screw for gear-cutting machines may be formed in the same manner.
