Abstract

1,093,599. Heart valve prosthesis. W. SEIDEL. March 26, 1965 [March 26, 1964], No. 12833/65. Heading A5R. An artificial heart valve comprises a valve body, a valve member movable with respect to the valve body, and a fixing ring for fastening the prosthesis to the heart tissue, the ring being initially separate from but capable of being united to the valve body. The union may be permanent, by glueing or welding, or detachable. A suitable form of valve is a ball valve, having a movable ball within a cage, as in Fig. 2, 1 being the valve body with a base ring 2, the inner face 3 of which forms a seating for the ball 4; the body and base are preferably made of polished suitable metal, the ball of silicone rubber. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the fixing ring, 14, is attached as such to the heart tissue, by stitching, glueing, or by attached spikessee Fig. 9. The fixing ring suitably has, on the side facing the valve member, a series of springy prongs, 18 in Fig. 2, ending in barbs, 19, which engage with annular grooves, 10 and 11 in the valve body base. When the fixing ring has been fixed to the heart tissue, the valve base is pushed into the fixing ring, when the barbs engage with the grooves and lock the valve in place. Other embodiments employ a separate sewing ring which is sewn to the heart tissue and then clamped between a fixing ring and the valve, the three components locking together suitably by springy prongs as above; and also the attachment of the valve to the fixing ring may be effected by pins which each have annular grooves and are held in place by a spring circlip. Further security of attachment of the device to the heart tissue is preferably provided by padding the fixing ring and/or the base ring with material having meshes or pores through which the natural tissue eventually grows.
