Abstract

1,092,791. Winches. J. H. WIGGINS. Feb. 22, 1965, No. 7553/65. Heading B8B. An apparatus for lifting a stiff assembled frame 13 into position at the top of a perimeter wall 11 comprises a plurality of evenly spaced cables 16 secured at one end to the frame 13, passing over sheaves 17 secured to the top of the wall 11 and having their other ends wound on to winch drums 19, each of which is mounted on a lever 21 pivoted at 22 to the wall 11, the lever 21 being loaded to apply a constant counterbalancing tension to the cable 16 which tension is slightly in excess of that required to balance the relevant portion of the deadweight of the frame 13 and to overcome the static friction of the sheave 17. A switch 27 in circuit with the winch drive motor 32 is connected to lever 21 and if the tension in the cable 16 increases, the lever 21 is lifted and the switch 27 is moved into the off position. With the cessation of the winch drive, the cable tension is reduced and the weighted lever 21 lowers causing the motor to be re-energised. The lever loading comprises a main weight 24 and a fine adjustment weight 26 movable along the lever 21. The static friction of the sheaves 17 may be overcome by an auxiliary winch or additional starting weight at only one of the lever positions. At the top of its travel, the frame 13 rests against a flange 12 on the wall 11 in readiness for fixation. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown) the lever system extends tangentially to the wall 11. In the embodiment of Fig. 9 (not shown) the winch and its motor are mounted directly on the main weight which is guided for vertical displacement. In the embodiment of Fig. 12 (not shown) the lever is loaded by adjustable tension springs instead of weights. In the embodiment of Fig. 13 (not shown) the spring loaded lever and associated motor switch are mounted on the frame to be lifted. the cable connecting one end of the lever with the winch which is rigidly secured to the outside of the periphery wall, passing over a sheave on top of the wall. In the embodiment of Fig. 14 (not shown), the cable passing from the winch rigidly fixed outside of the wall, is coupled to the frame via a loading spring and carries a winch motor switch operating lug. In the embodiment of Fig. 16 (not shown) the winch and switch operating mechanism are all mounted on the frame to be lifted and the remote end of the cable is secured to a frame at the top of the wall. In the embodiment of Fig. 17 (not shown) a roof and intermediate storey frame are to be lifted. The winch and switch mechanism are mounted on the roof frame and the remote end of the cable is attached to the top of the wall for lifting said frame, whereafter the end of the cable is attached to the storey frame therebelow, which can then be raised.
