Abstract

1,091,432. Dialysis; separating mixtures of gases. AMICON CORPORATION. Feb. 23, 1965, No. 7848/65. Headings BIB, B1L and B1X. A membrane separation device particularly of use for dialysis, or for separating components of gaseous mixtures, or for the removal of salt from sea water, consists of a membrane 10 joined at its longitudinal edges to a base strip 12 which has relief configuration in the form of longitudinal grooves on the side to which the membrane is joined and transverse grooves on the other side, the combination being spirally wound and two fluid flow paths being so formed. A longitudinal flow path is formed 'between the base strip and the attached membrane, and the other transverse path parallel to the spiral axis is formed between the other side of the membrane and the base strip of the next adjacent turn. They are wound on a hollow perforated core 20 through which fluid is introduced which passes through the longitudinal path, and the rolled cell has a layer of porous material 26 applied to it and it is placed within a cylindrical housing 24 which has an outlet 28 for the longitudinal flow path. End caps 32 (Fig. 8, not shown) provide through openings 36 for the introduction and removal of another fluid which flows along the transverse path. To separate the flow paths a layer of adhesive is applied between the back of the base strip and the member at the first turn as at 22, and between these two members at the end of the last turn as at 23, and also coatings 30 and 31 (Fig. 10, not shown) are applied about the edges of the first and last turns. The base strip is preferably of a plastic such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, cellulose acetate, or a metal such as aluminium, stainless steel, or copper, and may itself constitute a membrane material. The separation member is a sheet material such as cellulose actetate, or polyethylene.
