Abstract

969,673. Hydrogen diffusion membranes. JOHNSON MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. March 8, 1963 [April 17, 1962], No. 14812/62. Heading B1L. A hydrogen diffusion membrane comprises a flat-sided hollow element or envelope formed of two superposed layers or sheets of a hydrogen permeable material united together along the whole or a major proportion of their edge portions, and a porous sheet-like stiffening member located within the envelope to prevent distortion but permit passage of hydrogen therethrough. The envelopes may be formed of two rectangular sheets joined along three pairs of edges but open on the fourth pair or joined on all edges but having opposed apertures in the two sheets through which a tube passes, this tube having one or more perforations to allow hydrogen to pass into the tube. One modification has envelopes made of circular or oval sheets whilst another has the two layers formed by a single rectangular sheet folded over on itself along its longitudinal axis and having the free longitudinal edge and one or both end edges united together. The hydrogen permeable material may be Pd or an alloy thereof, e.g. 25% Ag-Pd. The porous stiffening member may be a fine mesh gauze of stainless steel or other metal or alloy unaffected by the conditions of operation and should substantially fill the interior of the envelope. The stiffener may be of similar thickness to the thickness of the sheet and may be mounted in a header in the open end of the envelope. A hydrogen diffusion unit comprises a plurality of such membranes mounted on a common support within an outer casing. In Fig. 4 the gaseous mixture containing hydrogen enters at 16a and the hydrogen diffuses through circular membranes 14 and out through pipe 15. In Fig. 5, the stiffener within the envelopes 17 may be in the form of a wire gauze mesh bent into two with the two parts thereof strengthening consecutive envelopes.
