Abstract

A patterned stretch fabric is produced by (a) forming a fabric of synthetic composite fibres, e.g. of nylon, polyvinyl, polyester and polyacrylonitrile fibres, which are capable of developing oily crimps in situ upon exposure to an elevated temperature in a relaxed free-to-shrink condition, (b) applying to selected localized areas of the fabric a material capable of inhibiting the development of coily crimps in the fibres when the fibres are exposed to conditions subsequently used to develop such coily p crimp, and (c) subjecting the fabric to an elevated temperature in a relaxed free-to-shrink condition to develop coily crimps in the fibres in those areas of the fabric which have not been treated to inhibit crimp development. The synthetic composite fibres are composed of two or more polymers having different thermal shrinkage behaviours which are eccentrically disposed about the fibre axis and throughout the fibre length so that the fibres develop three dimensional coily crimps upon exposure to an elevated temperature due to the differential thermal shrinkage. The fibres may be subjected to a stretching step at an elevated temperature and then cooled while maintained under tension. They may be subjected to mechanical crimping to assist in the operation of the various textile handling equipment through which they are processed but this crimp is normally lost during the subsequent development of the coily crimp. The fibres may be used to produce woven or knitted fabrics in an untwisted or slightly twisted state. The material applied to inhibit the development of coily crimps may be an emulsion of N-methylol acrylamide and polyethyl acrylate and may be applied to the selected localized areas by printing, spraying or stenciling. The treatment at elevated temperatures to develop the crimp may be effected by means of hot air, steam, hot water or other hot liquid medium containing swelling or shrinking agents, e.g. aqueous solutions of dimethyl formamide for acrylonitrile polymer fibres.
