Abstract

1,091,111. Clearing cotton; drafting. JEFFERSON MILLS Inc. Aug. 3, 1965 [April 19, 1965], No. 33141/65. Headings D1D, D1F and D1N. Cotton fibres are cleared by being formed into a web which is stretched and simultaneously vibrated, the debris and short fibres thus displaced being sucked away. In Fig. 1 (not shown) a web (25) from a carding engine is passed through a drawing device (18), condensed, calendered and stored at (21). The drawing device comprises, see Fig. 2, three pairs of toothed rollers, e.g. 22, 23. Each pair of rollers is intergeared (e.g. by forming a layer of chromium steel on the end portions of the toothed rollers) such that their teeth, while intermeshing, do not touch. As well as being drafted between successive roller pairs the web is drafted between the rollers of one pair due to the deepening engagement of the teeth as the web passes therebetween. The web is vibrated at the entry and exit points of the rollers by the alternate engagement by oppositely moving teeth. If the rollers of successive pairs have the same angular velocity (the diameter of the rollers of successive pairs being increased to produce the draft effect) it can be arranged that the length of web between roller pairs vibrates parallel to itself. A suction device 17 (Fig. 1) removes waste.
