Abstract

Polymeric foams are glazed and "dewindowed" by first wetting them with a non-flammable liquid, permeating them with an explodable gas mixture in a gas-confining zone, and then exploding this mixture. Specified foams are made from polyisocyanates based on polyethers, polyesters or castor oil, or polyvinyl chloride. Typical explodable gas mixtures contain oxygen supplied in part as air, and gases such as hydrogen, acetylene, ethylene, methane, ethane, propane, butane and dimethylether or else vapours of high vapour pressure liquid fuels such as methylethylether and isopropanol. The gas mixtures may be introduced into the gas-confining zone after evacuation thereof, and the volatile liquid component in such manner as to avoid direct contact with the wetted foam. The non-inflammable liquid may be water.
