[Also in Division F2] A valve for limiting the discharge pressure from a pump includes a differential-area piston 4, Fig. 1a, having its smaller face 5 directly exposed to the discharge pressure at 3 and its larger face 7 contiguous with a space 9 connected to the discharge pressure by way of flow restricting means 10, part of the space 9 being separated from the piston by a diaphragm 13 and connected to the suction pressure at 2. After the pump has been started a valve 11, which may be electrically actuated from the pump motor windings, is closed so that a slow build up of pressure takes place on the larger face 7 through the restriction 10 to close the valve 4. If the valve 11, which may be a needle valve, is cracked open or by-passed by an adjustable orifice, pressure bleeds from the space 9 to regulate the discharge pressure. The diaphragm 13 facilitates starting by providing a body of fluid which can be displaced through a balance pipe 12 into the suction side of the pump so that the initial movement of the piston 4 is unimpeded. A loading weight 13' may be connected to the diaphragm as shown in Fig. 2 and the piston may have a spring-loaded ball relief valve 55 to relieve surges on its larger face. An adjustably spring-loaded pressure relief valve 16' may be used to control the pressure in the space 9 and the closure member of this valve may consist of a piston loaded by an internal spring and having an orifice in its closure face. The piston 4 may also be controlled by a diaphragm-actuated needle valve, the diaphragm being subjected to pressure or vacuum at a remote point.
