Abstract
1,090,120. Extruding composite tubing. BRITISH GEON Ltd. March 18, 1966 [April 23, 1965], No. 17268/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] Composite tubing comprising an inner layer of normal impact vinyl chloride polymer and an outer layer of high impact polymer, i.e. one containing a rubbery modifier, is made by extruding the inner layer 14 from a die head 12 and passing it through a cross-head die 17, a pressure to prevent collapse being maintained within the tubing by delivery of compressed air from hollow mandrel 19 and by providing the free end of the tubing with a bung or by attaching a floating bung to mandrel 19. One or more cooled sizing dies 18 are provided. In a second embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), preformed tubing (8), comprising sections joined together by bungs (9), is fed to a cross-head die (2), and the composite tubing is cut transversely of bungs (9) by a cutting device (11). Each section contains material, e.g. water, chlorinated fluorinated methane, solid or liquid carbon dioxide to cool and/or maintain internal pressure within tubing (8) during the coating process. The extrusion passageways of crosshead dies (2) and 17 are lined with P.T.F.E. sleeves (4) and 16 respectively. Specific high impact polymers mentioned are modified polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene and acrylonitrile - butadiene - styrene. Various suitable modifiers are mentioned and a specific example is given.
