Abstract

1353826 Sizing extruded plastics sections PONT-A-MOUSSON SA 17 May 1971 [4 June 1970] 15342/71 Heading B5A An extruded thermoplastics section is sized by drawing through a sizing die, with reduced frictional resistance at a smaller clearance from the sizing surfaces of the die, e.g. in comparison with vacuum sizing, by the introduction of a pressurized gas, e.g. air to between the surfaces of the section and the die. The section, Fig. 2, comprises a plastics gutter P, of semicircular section having a tubular flange b, the corresponding sizing surfaces of the die B being defined between lower and upper parts 3, 4 thereof. Pressurized air is admitted, via passages 6, 7 through the die, to a series of grooves 10, 11, extending continuously across and spaced apart along the opposed convex and concave sizing die surfaces 3a, 4a, but is not admitted to the opposed sizing die surfaces 3b, 4b defining the tubular flange b and against which the flange b is urged by pressurized air which is admitted to the flange interior through the extrusion mandrel, and retained by a plug attached to the mandrel face, e.g. by a rod or wire, and disposed downstream of the sizing die.
