Abstract

1,089,362. Cutting tobacco. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd. and D. W. MOLINS. Feb. 17, 1965 [Feb. 18, 1964], No. 6733/64. Heading A4C. [Also in Division B3] A tobacco cutting machine comprises a rotary drum 8 carrying peripheral knives 13 with edges passing across a tobacco feed mouthpiece 5, a rotatable grinding cylinder 22, a trueing diamond 25 which is reciprocable on a path along the length of the grinding cylinder 22, and means for moving the drum 8 and cylinder 22 respectively towards the mouthpiece 5 and the path of the diamond 25. Oppositely threaded lead screws 25 and 51, associated respectively with a bracket 23 carrying the cylinder 22 and end frames 44, 45 of a cradle 60 in which the drum shaft 9 is journalled, are actuated by a lever 54 and a pawl and ratchet device 55 simultaneously to lower the cylinder 22 and raise the drum 8 in the latter case by pivoting the cradle 60 about pivots 46, after a trueing operation on the cylinder by the diamond 25. The diamond 25 is carried by a carriage 29 along a rail 30 and is adjustable in position relative to the grinding cylinder 22. Shredded tobacco is carried away through a passage formed between the drum 8 and a cover plate 57 in an air stream directed through openings 17 in the drum 8 adjacent the knives 13. The knives 13 may be inclined relative to a radial plane through the axis 9 of the drum 8.
