Abstract

1,089,336. Toothed gearing. CAM YEARS (CLEVEDON) Ltd. Nov. 2, 1964 [Nov. 7, 1963], No. 44067/63. Heading F2Q. A vehicle rack and pinion steering gear has an hydraulic damper between the longitudinally movable rack and the rack housing to damp out road wheel shock and vibration. A stationary piston 14, fast with a housing end cap 12, mates with an oil-filled cylinder 7, on the end of the rack 1 having centralized drag-link points 3, to form two pressure chambers 15, 16 connected by a one-way spring valve 18 in the piston 14. Rightwards movement of the rack forces oil through the piston valve 18 from chamber 15 to chamber 16 and from there via a one-way adjustable valve 20 to an annular rack chamber 8 surrounding the cylinder 7. Leftwards rack movement forces oil from chamber 16 through the valve 20 to chamber 8 and from there through a one-way spring valve 22 to the chamber 15. The valves may be adjustable. A further embodiment operates similarly and has an oil groove instead of the annular chamber 8 which is also connected to an oil reservoir. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), an oil cylinder (37) in the rack end mates with a plunger (33) fast in the end cap, and the rack end has an annular piston (30) forming with a housing cylinder (32) an oil chamber (38). Rightwards or leftwards rack movement transfers oil between the rack chamber (37) and the housing chamber (38) through a two-way valve (40) in the annular rack piston. The chamber (38) is connected via a low-pressure one-way valve (44) to an oil reservoir (41) in the housing end cap.
