Abstract

1,088,827. Tubular heat exchange elements; furnace walls. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Sept. 16, 1965 [Sept. 18, 1964], No. 39650/65. Headings F4B and F4S. Heat exchanger tube panels comprise a plurality of members (e.g. 1) each containing a bore 2 or a row of bores and having two generally oppositely projecting fins 3, 4 lying to one side of a plane A-B containing the axis of the bore or all of the axes of the bores and each member being reinforced on the other side of that plane. In the embodiments having a single bore, the reinforcement may be provided by a thickening 7 of the bore wall or may be provided by one or more longitudinally extending radially or tangentially projecting ribs. The fins may be so shaped to provide flat surfaces 5, as shown, or concave or convex surfaces (Figs. 2-7, not shown). The embodiment having a plurality of bores has two find and two ribs, one fin and one rib being tangential to and on opposite sides of each external bore. The ribs and/or fins may be at least partially corrugated, and may be periodically cut away to form a plurality of aligned ribs and/or fins. The members are formed by forging, rolling, milling or drawing. A number of panels according to the invention may be welded together to form a wall lining of, for example, vapour generating tubes around a flue gas passage of a boiler.
