Abstract

Al or Al alloys are coated with tin by immersion in an aqueous bath at 20 DEG -90 DEG C. containing either Na or K stannate and a chelating agent capable of chelating Cu and Mg in defined alkali solutions and includes EDTA, N, N-dihydroxy ethyl glycine and N-hydroxy ethyl ethylene diamine triacetic acid and their salts. The pH is preferably above 12 and NaOH or KOH may be added initially to achieve this. Alloys containing 2-4% Cu, 1-1.5% Mg, 9-13% Si, Fe, Zn and Ni are referred to. The substrate may first be treated successively in a solution of Na phosphate and carbonate, concentrated HNO3 and rinsed in water.
