Abstract
1,084,589. Eddy-current machines. HEENAN & FROUDE Ltd. July 19, 1965 [Aug. 31, 1964], No. 30578/65. Heading H2A. In eddy-current apparatus, such as couplings, dynamometers and brakes, the inner surface of the inductor drum 25 is provided with a facing A of magnetizable metal, e.g. nickel, having an electrical resistance lower than that of the inductor drum, so as to protect the drum against corrosion and to improve the torqueslipspeed characteristic of the apparatus. The gap 27 between inductor and rotor teeth 23 may be 1/32 to <SP>1</SP>/ 8 of an inch and the thickness of the facing may be from 0À005 to 0À030 of an inch and may have a resistance of 5-8 micro ohm cm. at 20‹ C. The inductor drum 25 is formed of two cylinders, of e.g. iron or steel, welded together at 2. A generator 12, which is belt driven from shaft 17, feeds the field winding 7. Coolant, e.g. water, from inlet 4 splits into two paths L, U; one through the rotor teeth 23 and the other through gaps 33, 35 between the annular field poles 3, 5 and the inductor drum to meet in chamber 8 for removal at 10.
