Abstract

1,084,020. Beds. COX OF WATFORD Ltd. and C. TOON. June 11, 1965 [Oct. 6, 1964], No. 40774/64. Heading A4J. [Also in Division B8] A hospital bed includes a jacking system which comprises a chassis frame 1 mounted on castors 2. A mattress 26 is carried on a mattress frame 25 mounted on a subframe 3. The sub-frame 3 is mounted on the frame 1 by two connecting frames 4 with cross members 5, Fig. 3 (not shown), mounted between depending portions 3a so as to be rotatable about horizontal axes 6. Each frame 4 has a short lever extension 7 engaged with a a screw and nut mechanism, Fig. 4, in a housing 8. Rotation of a handle 19 on an extensible shaft 18, through opposite handed threads, separates the upper ends of lever extensions 7 to raise the frame 3 by means of long lever extensions 21 pivoted in slots (not shown) in the chassis frame 1. Lifting is assisted by tension springs 37. Lowering is achieved by reversing the rotation of the handle 19 to draw the upper ends of the short lever extensions 7 together. The mattress frame 25 has removable safety rails 2 and is pivotally attached adjacent the head end of the sub-frame 3 so that it can be turned about a horizontal axis, a cross-bar 34 engaging in any one of recesses 33a in slots 33 in supporting struts 32 to retain the desired inclination.
