Abstract
1,083,884. Method of pre-stressing concrete. E. R. M. HART. Sept. 30, 1964, No. 39785/64. Addition to 1,066,196. Heading E1W. A pipe 10 is compressed via a rod 11 with threaded ends 12, and cast into a concrete structure in order to tension it. The pipe 10 may be compressed simply by tightening nuts 13 up against washers 14 at each end of rod 11, the nuts and washers remaining outside the concrete after casting so that the rod may be released. Alternatively, a hydraulic jack may be employed, operating between one threaded end 12 of the rod, and the adjacent washer 14, to force them apart whilst the other end of the rod is fixed relative to the pipe by means of the nut 13. A third method is to use two jacks, one at each end, each operating between the respective ends of the rod and of the pipe. The rod may be left inside the pipe after it has been cast into the concrete structure and the nuts removed, or it may be removed. External flanges or collars may be provided on the pipe to assist the bonding with the concrete.
